Fitness for Duty
A targeted medical or psychological assessment, also often referred to as a return-to-work exam. It is requested to determine if an employee can safely perform their essential job functions without posing a risk to themselves or others. It is a job-related evaluation, commonly used after injury, for safety-sensitive positions, or when behavior raises concerns. The underlying concern needs to be suspected as medical. There is no set rate. The rate is determined by the examiner.
IME
Independent Medical Examinations (IME): A comprehensive, one-time medical evaluation conducted by a doctor who has no prior treatment relationship with the patient. It provides an objective assessment of an individual’s injuries, necessary treatments, or work capacity in legal or insurance claims. There is no set rate. The rate is determined by the examiner.
Impairments
Impairment Rating (IR): A percentage assigned by a physician which represents the permanent physical damage or loss of function to a worker’s body after no further significant improvement is expected. The Utah Labor Commission sets rates for impairment ratings.
